The Elephant  – art exhibition is a group arts exhibition featuring work that challenges both artist and viewer to consider their choices about what in our lives, should be revealed and what should be hidden.    We want the elephant out in the open so we can find release…

“The Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss, It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

My entree for this show was a piece of mine called “ As I See It.” The elephant in the room is addiction and the impact it has on a family. Below is my description of the piece.

During the course of my betterment I decided to quit drinking alcohol. It was terrible for my health as well as my relationships with my wife, my kids, and my friends. What I did find is that it was extremely difficult to change my habitual patterns considering I had been doing it for 20 years or so. I thought o’crap I’m an alcoholic, what do I do from here. I started an outpatient program for alcoholism, where I learned some tools in dealing with my habitual self. A lot of this training was through the alcoholics anonymous book, but in general it was thoughts and concepts on managing your mind, and they work in other areas of life as well. Being the philosophy focused person I am, I really appreciated this way of thinking and still do to a point, minus any god implications. I rook this journey as a betterment of my mind and body it allowed me to focus in areas I hadn’t been able to focus before. So I added Bill W. to my list of admired philosopher and thinkers. He might not be of philosophic pedigree, but his did expand on a great way to gain control; of your mind and focus on your personal development....5.....

About the producer: Niki Lopez is a multi-media artist.  Known for her vibrant color palate, Lopez’s often ‘other-worldly’ art has been exhibited across South Florida, New York, and California.  Lopez is also a Graphic Designer known for her community spirit and avant-garde art shows.  Niki is passionate about community & outreach.  Lopez has been an integral  part of the creation of the 1310 Gallery space located within the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts, where residents create monthly art programs.  As Web Master, Niki created the community’s on-line presence, and is a contributor to the 1310 Gallery brand via Social Media.

New Zealand collage art exchange 2016

An artist out of Taranaki, New Zealand, Dale Devereux Copeland, holds a unique art exchange every year. Where artist from around the world send her artwork that is then sorted and used for a exhibit in New Zealand, as well as on two different websites www.outofsight.co.nz and http://virtual.tart.co.nz . After the exhibit is over the best pieces from each artist makes their way to Verbeke Foundation in Belgium where the collection will be donated as a public collection for the year.

ENGLAND THE BEAUTIFUL

 

The first mural is also a full large scale collage cut into 12 smaller collages. This mural was titles "England the Beautiful" and features a beautiful young lady who passed away during child birth. She is passionately missed by her family and her daughter who survived. It represents the beautiful thing that come out of England. 3 of the 12 collages were given to the family as a memorial. The other 9 went to the exchange.

WORKING CLASS

The second mural is also a fulle large scale collage cut into 9 smaller collages. This mural was titled "Working Class" and features a different aspect of English life. There is no running image in these collages. The over all imagery is working class life, gane life, sex, and poverty. This is the opposite of England the Beautiful, the underbelly. Random images scoring the page like graffiti on a wall.

Bath pieces starte with a combination Applica of 4 pound bags, and drywall compound. From there hand cut stencils are applied with spray paint in a collage format. Once that process is complete the flags were added and the pieces were cut into smaller sections for the exchange.....5.....

Multiversal @ Art Basel 2009

 

 

Kazilla invited me to enter for her very first Art Basel event in 2009. The turnout was amazing for the distance for the "Basel" strip. I was very proud that Kazilla was able to develop such a geat event. From the entertainment to the gallery, she was a class act. I wish her the best and thank her for the opportunity, good luck in the future......

 

My "4lb Bag" piece I had hanging during the show, joined by many other talented and new artists. I was honored to be part of it.

 

One of several pieces I was working on during the duration of the Basel weekend. This one got alot of hype, the begining of my 213 series. I enjoyed working in public but in all I do not think live art is my thing. Might do it every once in a while but probably not so often. I will say I had the best time doing live art at this event, more so than any other live art event I have done.....5.....

 

 

 

 



Ukulele Festival donation 2010

  

My friend Ty Olopani and Mapuana Ebbitt asked me if I would be interested in donating a peice of art for their very first Ukulele Festival. I wanted to produce something that spoke of the festival and of course added a bit of 5 in the mix. I found an old frame, glass panel and cardboard insert and began to work something that would vibe with the festival. It's a mixture of my time space stencil and some hawiian inspired stencils I did for my brother-in-laws mural with my nephew. With some distressed paint on the glass and cardboard ribs showing through the paint, perfect.....

 

 



 

This work was raffle to the Gross Family and now hangs in Mr Gross' ukulele practice studio, enjoy.....5.....



5G: @ BSO PALS

 

 

 

 

Thanks Luz Pla Angel for the Invite me to produce a piece for the BSO PAL clubhouse. I wanted to do something that focused on kids and also kept the urban vibe they were going for with the DJ section of the club. What a great space where kids can come an learn how to DJ in a safe clean environment. I also wanted to incorporate my G in the piece, so I laid out a bunch of stencil I cut of children, and had her pick and place them at will. The collage is a bit choppy, but its all G so that makes it perfect. I would say pretty good for her first painting placements, and my first 5G work. Maybe sometime i the future I will get to see her creativity shine brighter.....5.....



The Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco 2012

 

A friend of mine Sean Murdock invited me to join anevent where I donated a peice of work to help the homeless. I choose this work because this work represents the strife people face with drug addiction and alcoholism. This is a much more difficult area of life than most understand.

I donated this peice because to represents the indiference of alocohol abuse. It's created with 4 lbs bags one would get when purchaseing a quart of beer so the issue to definant.

 An amazing event probabely the first of it's kind in Fort Lauderdale, an actual Graf event where the city just stepped back and let art be art. Of course only to a point. The one bad thing about Graf expos is that they leave the artist open to interpreation by the police. Letting office take name and numbers as if this form of art is like gangbanging or other victim related crimes. But in all it's a great way for public artist to show their colors and shine.

I didn't register for the event but I did take it upon meself to decorate 5 rail columns with some standard stencils I had handy just to ad unique quality to this event, lol

Bad Girl's Club Season 5.....

In August 2010, myself, Kazilla, and several other locals artist took part in showing our work on the Bad Girls Club Miami, of course, Season 5. I do have to ask it was really interested see my work around the drunken debauchery of the bad girls.

 

 

 

I wonder on sometime what the girl's on the show thought of the work and the public in general.....

 

 

 

The only disadvantage was that the mural of my wife "Muse Again" got water logged during one of many girl fights on the show. It now is displayed in our home with memories only it retains.....

THROUGH THE EYES OF LOVE 2009

I take a lot of pride in the support of HIV awareness and the public awareness of "issues" in our business system when it come to our citizens being health and happy, healthcare and prescriptions in general. I just recently posted and story about the CEO of Gilead masking the 50 Million dollar club, this is why I like to work with awareness, because so many people are blind to it the fact that there is a lot of people making a lot of money keeping people sick. Not because there is no cure or because there is no money. Simply because they make a shit ton of money keeping people stable. Let me define stable, in the pharmaceuticals eyes, stable is common people who make just above poverty or average American spending tens of thousands of dollars a year purchasing medications to survive. Yet every other week we are developing a way to stay hard or prevent pregnancy. Pharmaceuticals are working hard just not on solving the problem. Why solve a problem is in the end you lost money from it, cure means loss of profits.  

One thing I learned about this show was while doing research, it took me hours to find the census number of  people infected in south florida. A matter of fact I never found a true number. hours I spent on the internet with no result. If awareness was important to the government am pretty sure those numbers would be very easy to find on google. No surprise, if awarness was marketed it would mean loss of profits.... Think Pozitive......5.......

Love Dub Event

Funny Story: I asked a friend if he might want someone like myself to come out and paint for a show he was DJing. He thought it would be a great idea so I counted myself in. Great music, great people, sounded like a great idea. I entered that night, picked a isolated spot, because that is the atompshere I enjoyed, and began to paint. I had two items I was working on at the present so I brought both. One was a bit taboo and the other a bit tame, but both hung clear in my mind as to what I was trying to produce that evening. The dubstep music that night moved me and I felt more driven to produce the taboo work more then the other. I started the process 213C a third installation of the 213 series.....

I was met with automatic resistance. A lady approached and started to critic the work without even asking about the content. I stood by in shock amazed that someone so openminded in image was so close minded in soul. She called herself a "burner" I guess short for the burning man movement, which I happen to think is amazing. She said that she was an independent woman and that the image offended her. She stated that all she saw was a big vigina. I laughed inside, because the concept of this work is so far from a "Big Vigina". I didn't even expain the work to the  self proclaimed "burner" because I really didn't think she would get it anyway, even though, as she stated,  she dated a conceptual artist, lol. It amazes me how many people call themselves worldly, open and understanding when they are still as straining and imperfect as the rest of us, at least I'm honest in saying I'm just as faulty as the rest of them. Long story short it killed my energy and I stopped my production on the piece within seconds. I started to work on the second more tame work. and really got another pulse of energy during the event. I started to create a more abstract work with alot of vibrate colors and patterns.....

It seemed to go off better then the taboo work with the crowd. I took the work home and added a stain pink overlay and some yellow flares. On top I added a wheatpaste print of my lovely wife as I had imagined, with a dripped out heart in white. I have to say "Thank You" to the lady at the show for switching my attention to the Muse work, I should have probably started on that work to begin with. This piece made it on to The Bad Girls Club season 5. Thanks to that self righteous lady who claimed indepence. Thank You, both works are complete and I couldn't have done it without you. It still surprises me that negative energy can sometimes be as motivating as positive energy, given the situation. In general I will turn anything positive. one beautiful piece about my wife and one beautiful peice about the tragedy of life and vanity in America.....5......

5 In Retrospect Part 1 & 2

Experience is a blessing and a curse one who Experiences to much negativity may find it hard to journey back to peace, family, and happiness.....5.....

5 In Retrospect (Birthing) Part 1:  This part is a the positve aspect, the begining when everything is innocent and everything is clear. It's the developing from childhood to the journey into adolescents and everything that coming with it. The birth of creativity and the touch on influence. It's family, friends, experience and love.

 

5 In Retrospect (Turning Point) Part 2: Thie part falls more and than into the unwanted fade of negative influence. the chancing of demons and then finding them willing to embrace you. It's the dark side of the personality some donot ever see and some experience to much. A place where if you are not careful will swallow you whole..... 

The transition of the two videos is to repeat in circulation to depict the cycle of positive and negative in all our live, some graver than other but all equa in some respect.....5.....



5 In Retrospect

5 IN RETROSPECT OFFERS THE FOLLOWING ENTERTAINMENT AND VIEWING:

A SOLO RETROSPECTIVE SHOWING OF ARTIST IAIN BARNES AKA 5:

     Artist 5, a transplant from Suffolk, England to a seasoned south Floridian, considers his art a mixture of Urban Street art, abstract, deconstruction, dysfunction, and existentialism, his five points of power so to speak. With most of his art he likes to incorporate and show the decay of materials as well as the experimental use of non-conventional materials such as concrete patch, motor oil, and drywall compound to name a few. “I like my work to look as if it were produced at an earlier date and over time with weather and age it becomes worn and battered with chipping paint and runny lines”, says 5. He feels art to be universal from the bleeding of rust into an old abandoned car to the print on a billboard, some are good representations, some are bad but all are art. As well as showing the elements 5 also caters to the research of HIV/AIDS and incorporates it into his work as well. "HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence like some cancers and other obscure disease, but it is a social disease which in some cases can be more detrimental then even the thought of death" says 5.

DOCTOR JONES (DUBSTEP):

Growing up in South Florida, Doctor Jones (Brian Amaral) was inspired by the futuristic sounds of the exploding electronic music scene of the early 2000's. As his interest grew and his tastes expanded, he was introduced to more underground and experimental styles of music such as Dubstep, Glitch-Hop, Psybient Dub, and other electronic explorations. These powerful, emerging sounds ignited a fire ...of passion in him that sparked an urgent need to share these vibrations that moved him at the core of his being.      Doctor Jones has performed at several art and music festivals throughout south and central Florida, as well as North Carolina and Nevada. Doctor Jones features regularly at the annual Art Basel Miami, held at Moksha Studios, where he has played alongside notable electronic artists such as Bluetech, David Starfire, and Phutureprimitive. Art Basel also offered him the chance to play for famed visionary painters such as Alex Grey, Mark Henson, Eva Ruiz, and others. A local fan favorite and a talented emcee,dj and producer George has rocked numerous parties as well as collaborated with many great musicians in his young career.

Our mission at Kids In Distress (KID) is to prevent child abuse, preserve the family, and treat children who have been abused and neglected. Recognized as a premier agency in South Florida, we provide family strengthening services as well as children's services for more than 6,000 children and their families. All of our programs and services are designed specifically to give children and their families the tools, skills, services, and education they need to maintain a safe, stable, and healthy environment in which to thrive.

Started in a small house in 1979 as an emergency shelter for the youngest victims of abuse and neglect, we have since expanded services and grown to a 5-acre campus in Broward County with a satellite office in Palm Beach County. We are also the largest provider of foster homes in both Broward and Palm Beach counties, many of which become adoptive homes for children who cannot be reunified with their biological families. We operate one of the only remaining emergency shelters for children ages birth to 15 years of age, and a family counseling center for counseling and therapy needs.

Along with our adoptive and shelter services, Kids In Distress allocates more than 60% of our agency budget toward programs that are community-based. We offer in-home, family strengthening programs that care for and educate pregnant women and new mothers, programs that assist families with issues of domestic violence, substance abuse, and extreme economic stress, and we provide assistance in accessing everything from food stamps and employment assistance to housing and legal assistance. More recently, we are now able to provide optical and dental care for children in our community who, in many cases, have never been to a dentist or optometrist.

ART RAFFLE BENEFITING: PROJECT SEBIS

     Project Sebis is one of the philanthropies the "5 In Retrospect" event will be supporting on November 26th. We will be raffling off a work by Iain Barnes aka 5, which will benefit our little superhero. To give you a little more background on Sebastian here is his story:

     I was brought in to the ER on July 25th, 2011 because I was having trouble breathing. I have asthma since I was 1 year old. After several breathing treatments in the ER and no change, an X-ray was done. Results came back abnormal, so a CT scan was done. Results determined that my right lung was full of fluid and a mass was present. Immediately I was transferred to the PICU. Chest tube was put in to drain my lung and they took some of the fluid and sent it to pathology. Hours later my family received the most horrible news on July 26th that I had cancer. I have T-Cell Lymphoma located in my chest. God willing it will shrink and gone very soon. For the next three years I will undergo chemo and god willing and with all of your prayers I will be cancer free. God is the strongest healer and with his help and all of your prayers I will be cured very soon. I am 6 year old with a full life ahead of me. I am filled with love and support. I love to draw and play. My life has completely changed and now my goal is to fight this bug inside of me. With all of your prayers and with taking my super hero medication I am going to win this battle!

Montce is designer Alexandra Grief first collection of swimwear, accessories, coverups, and apparel.
Montce is all about mixing and matching nice solid color choies with funky prints.
It a lot about a balance between surf shop and boutique.
Montce is about smaller bikini cuts that don't cut in and is very customizable for your body type and your style.

Virginia Cuellar (Miss Marvel) was born in El Salvador in 1980. She began painting at the age of 4. Utilizing the beautiful wildlife, landscapes surrounding her and what was left at the end of the civil war as her subject matter.

I am originally from Maryland, I moved away when I was 13, but I hope that I will be able to move back before the next cicada invasion, but I know I can never really go back, but I fool myself and entertain the idea... I've got this whole nostalgic melancholic stunted hurt thing going on that persists...
I paint, and while I love to paint different subjects, I keep getting lured backs to the sweets....which I really enjoy painting, but I also love landscapes, portraits, and other subjects....until I see a sweet that I just have to paint!!!!
